NHS Driven Innovation

In-house NHS design and engineering teams have a key role to play in the development and deployment of Healthcare Technology, facilitating safe, effective and more affordable models of care. Our innovation model has been tailored to address this need, accelerating the introduction of new technology into the NHS and providing new opportunities for industry.

We're incentivised by the desire to provide our patients with better care and are uniquely placed to understand unmet needs and overcome barriers to deployment.

The Medical Devices Unit

The MDU is a multi-disciplinary team of Engineers and Scientists. Being embedded in the NHS gives access to an extensive network of NHS clinician and scientist collaborators with an in-depth knowledge of unmet needs and device safety considerations, and we are ideally positioned to validate solutions.

Our skills and expertise

The Medical Devices Unit have industry-proven capabilities in product design; mechanical, electronic and software engineering; informatics; image processing and the application of medical device regulations.

Medical devices certification

BSI have certified our Quality Management System to ISO 13485:2016 for medical device design and manufacture.

Our collaborators

During a project initiation phase, we work closely with our clinical, scientific and technical NHS colleagues to articulate the requirements and evaluate existing solutions. These teams continue to be involved during the development phase to provide expertise for device safety, to validate solutions and, where necessary, support clinical trials. We frequently collaborate with academia and industry to explore routes to commercialisation and deployment.
